The Bishop's Office
The Bishop's Office provides support for the Bishop in his pastoral responsibilities. The work of the office includes:
  • assisting the Bishop with correspondence
  • handling enquiries about church life
  • receiving and investigating concerns relating to parishes, priests and schools
  • coordinating the appointment and support of clergy in the diocese
  • assisting clergy and religious with immigration issues
  • providing a liaison between the Bishop and parish pastoral workers
  • offering support to Catholic hospital chaplains
  • handling church legalities regarding weddings
  • providing a link between the Bishop and Religious working in the diocese
  • communicating with other NZ dioceses, religious superiors, and the Holy See
  • providing information regarding attending Papal Audiences
  • providing information to order Papal Blessings, or Papal Awards

Bishop of Auckland: Bishop Patrick Dunn
Bishop Patrick DunnAlthough born in London, Bishop Patrick Dunn is an Aucklander and was educated at St Michael's School, Remuera, followed by Sacred Heart College in Glen Innes.

Upon leaving school, he studied at the University of Auckland. He studied for the Priesthood at Holy Cross Seminary in Mosgiel and was ordained in 1976. Following his ordination, he undertook pastoral work, including work with the Catholic Maori Mission and the Parishes of Mangere East, Takapuna, Pakuranga and Northcote.

He was Diocesan Director of Vocations from 1986 to 1987 and following this, from 1988 to 1989, he studied at Melbourne College of Divinity for a Master of Theology degree. In 1990 he published a book entitled Priesthood and in 1992 was appointed personal assistant to the then Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Denis Browne.

On the 25 of July, 1994, he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland, and on Christmas Eve was appointed the 11th Bishop of Auckland. He was formally installed as Bishop in St Patrick's Cathedral on 29 March, 1995. He is also the Episcopal Deputy, Canon Law Commission.

Bishop Assistant: Bishop Robin Leamy
Bishop Robin Leamy was born in Wellington and was educated by the Brigidine Sisters and later by the Marist Fathers at St Patrick's College in Silverstream. After Leaving school, he studied at Canterbury University where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree in history and Classical Studies.

He studied for the Priesthood at the Marist Seminary in Greenmeadows and was ordained in 1958. After sixteen years in Samoa, he was elected to Provincial of the Society of Mary for the Pacific region, based in Fiji.

He was appointed Bishop of the Cooks and Niue in 1983, before returning to New Zealand in 1997 where he is now Bishop Assistant and Vicar General in the Diocese of Auckland.  He is also Episcopal Deputy for Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand, the Canon Law Commission, Mahitahi Catholic Overseas Volunteers, the Commission for Mission and as a Conference representative on the Executive of the Mixed Commission.
 
Bishop Emeritus: Bishop John Mackey
Bishop John Mackey was born in Ireland in 1918 and was educated in Auckland by the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St Joseph. He attended Sacred Heart College in Glen Innes, Auckland and studied for the Priesthood at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel.

He was ordained in 1941 and with a Doctorate in Education and a Master of Arts degree in history, he spent the earlier years of his priesthood as Director of Education in the Auckland Diocese.

He was previously Professor of Church History at New Zealand's National Seminary, Holy Cross College, and lecturer in Church History at the University of Otago.

He was the 9th Bishop of Auckland from 1974 to 1984 and is also the author of three books: Reflections on Church History, The Making of a State System, and Looking at Ourselves - the Church Moving towards the Third Millennium.
