
Although born in London, Bishop Patrick Dunn is an Aucklander and was educated at St Michael's School, Remuera, followed by Sacred Heart College in Glen Innes.
Upon leaving school, he studied at the University of Auckland. He studied for the Priesthood at Holy Cross Seminary in Mosgiel and was ordained in 1976. Following his ordination, he undertook pastoral work, including work with the Catholic Maori Mission and the Parishes of Mangere East, Takapuna, Pakuranga and Northcote.
He was Diocesan Director of Vocations from 1986 to 1987 and following this, from 1988 to 1989, he studied at Melbourne College of Divinity for a Master of Theology degree. In 1990 he published a book entitled
Priesthood and in 1992 was appointed personal assistant to the then Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Denis Browne.
On the 25 of July, 1994, he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland, and on Christmas Eve was appointed the 11th Bishop of Auckland. He was formally installed as Bishop in St Patrick's Cathedral on 29 March, 1995. He is also the Episcopal Deputy, Canon Law Commission.
