About the Bishop
The Diocese is served by Bishop Patrick Dunn. Bishop Patrick was ordained to priesthood at his family’s parish church, St Michael’s in Remuera, on 24 April 1976. He was formally installed as 11th Bishop of Auckland at St Patrick’s Cathedral on 29 March 1995.
Diocesan Pastoral Plan – Fit For Mission
Bishop Patrick Dunn launched the Catholic Diocese of Auckland Pastoral Plan at Pentecost 2014. The Pastoral Plan is called Fit for Mission.
Laudato Si – Care for Our Common Home
This papal document calls us to dialogue regarding the nurture and care of the earth. It is 120 pages long, full of references to wisdom of the past and present (including our own NZ Catholic Bishops).
Sacraments
In the Sacraments Jesus acts in and through the ritual. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, the transforming grace of Christ’s action is gifted to those participating. A Sacrament is more than a symbol of a spiritual reality; it actually makes the spiritual reality present in the here and now as the Sacrament is celebrated.
Catholic Caring Foundation
The Catholic Caring Foundation raises funds for distribution to a wide range of organisations located throughout the diocese of Auckland.
When it comes to allocating assistance to the organisations it helps, the Foundation adopts a broad view, funding both Catholic and non-Catholic organisations.
Each service the Foundation assists meets a particular need whether in special education for adolescents who are no longer in mainstream schooling, chaplain support for prisoners, or specialist support both physically and spiritually for intellectually disabled people.
Catholic Social Services
At the heart of the Christian message and Catholic tradition is a commitment to providing social services for people in difficulty regardless of their spiritual beliefs.
As part of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland, Catholic Social Services has a long-standing commitment to the wellbeing of families and individuals in our community, with particular emphasis on families and couples in need of counselling, social work and/or parenting assistance.
CSS is based in Ponsonby in Auckland City and Otara in South Auckland.
Education
The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) supports the work of school principals and staff, parents and parish priests in providing quality Catholic education to students from Early Childhood to Year 13 living in the Diocese of Auckland. www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/catholic-schools
NZ Catholic Newspaper
NZ Catholic is a publication owned and operated by the Auckland Diocese. It continues the unbroken tradition of Catholic papers published by the Bishop of Auckland in this diocese for the past ninety-seven years.
Its underlying policy is to respect and uphold Catholic teaching and principles, but in the best traditions of professional journalism it provides readers with a forum for informed discussion, debate and investigation on all aspects of Catholic faith and aspiration.
Since it was launched in 1996, NZ Catholic newspaper has won more than 70 awards for excellence in religious journalism and receives consistent, positive feedback from readers.

Diocesan History
The Catholic Diocese of Auckland is one of two original dioceses in New Zealand. Established on 20 June, 1848, the original territory of the Diocese was divided on 6 March 1980, forming the additional Diocese of Hamilton. The Eugene O’Sullivan Library is available for the research and study needs of the priests and the people of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland, students at the School of Theology and the wider public of Auckland.
