Today is the 4th Sunday after Easter. On one hand, the readings and Gospel are very hard sounding and on the other spoken in very simple vernacular. We are introduced to Jesus as shepherd. The people Jesus was speaking to were all very familiar with shepherds, the life they lived, the dangers they faced.
Everyone there would have known that someone or something coming in through any other way other than the gate provided by the shepherd would have either bandits or animals and all definitely up to no good.
Jesus is getting to realise that the only way we can have relationship with God is through Him and He is the only door.
He is also the one whose voice we must recognise when we come through the door because Jesus wants us to converse and communicate as family with Him in our heart.
The first reading puts this relation to us in terms of Baptism. The Baptised in Jesus gives us the privilege of being a part of His family through repentance and puts us on another path, another direction one to the Father through Him.
So todays message is simple – we need Jesus not just for our eternal journey, but for our, Jesus lead, day to day life.
Recognising the voice of Jesus helps us to recognise those voices who are not Jesus, and this is critical t our Heaven bound journey.
As we are on the road to Pentecost, we are realising that we will be needing much more than just ourselves to reach the end. We are learning that we will need the Holy Spirit to become the body of Christ Jesus needs us to be.
Next week we will discover that our new life in Christ is one of service, ‘Deaconia’. As Jesus came to serve, so must we come to serve for we must model Jesus to all.
