Christmas is a time for giving and receiving gifts. As an archivist I do like discovering historical gifts especially when I can track the provenance. Bishop Lenihan received a few amazing gifts in his time as Bishop of Auckland (1896-1910).
In 1903 he was presented with a car on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of his Consecration as Bishop. Here is the invite to the occasion and a photograph of Lenihan in the driver’s seat in front of Bishop’s House.
While not specifically to Bishop Lenihan, a significant taonga was given to the diocese during Lenihan’s time. The illuminated gradual from 1427 is always a popular item for displays and serves as a reminder of the age of Catholic traditions.
A car and an illuminated manuscript -wow! For Christmas this year I am expecting the usual pack of deodorant and shower gel -LOL
