The Josephite Sisters have been involved in catholic education in New Zealand since 1880. A recent discovery in the archives indicates they were bakers as well.
The archives has only recently purchased a digital catalogue system. Until the work of entering the listings is completed, we rely on our hard copy lists. Going through lever arch files and folders can be a slow process so often checking the actual archive boxes is just as quick. Last week I was looking for an item and moved a very heavy box with a handle protruding. What a surprise to discover this-
The label says ALTAR-BREAD MACHINE FROM ST BENEDICT’S CONVENT 1984. A review of the accession record says it was received by the Archive in 2006 from one of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (RSJ)
While the plaque says 1984, the wiring and Bakelite plug suggests a much earlier date.
Along with the bread maker there were two sets of host cutters transferred to the archive.
These cutters are like other cutters in the collection while the electric bread maker is a contrast to the bread making thongs we received from Fr Foley (see the blog from November 13th 2023 - https://www.aucklandcatholic.org.nz/2023/11/13/the-sacred-and-the-profane-tapu-and-noa/).
