While entering accessions into our database I came across the donation of two rugby championship caps awarded to Bernard Sweeney.
Bernard played for Auckland Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby League Club and was an old boy from the Marist School in Vermont St, Ponsonby. In 1924 the Marist Old Boys Club controversially defected from rugby union to league hence the RAU and ARL embroidery.
These caps are not the only pieces of millinery in the archive collection.
We have a number of mitres – the ceremonial headdress of a Bishop
|
This Mitre belonged to Archbishop Liston. It is studded with rhinestones making it very decorative by today’s standards. It makes me wonder if it was used for episcopal line dancing! |
These are biretta. The black was worn by priests, the one with edging by a Monsignor and the reddish-purple by a bishop. Since Vatican II the use of the biretta has been optional.

This hat belonged to Bishop Cleary (Bishop from 1910 to 1929)
We also have a number of Zucchetti, a type scull cap.
The most precious Zucchetto we have was worn by Pope John Paul II on his visit to Aotearoa in 1986. He was canonised – declared a saint - in 2013
