Theological Education

Good Shepherd College – Te Hepara Pai

Good Shepherd College began in 2001, teaching the Bachelor of Theology degree for the Sydney College of Divinity through their formal association with the Catholic Institute of Sydney. The College brings together the personnel and libraries of Holy Cross College and Mount St Mary’s College.  Theology and its related disciplines are taught and studied to attain a deeper understanding of divine revelation and the treasure of Christian wisdom in the Catholic tradition.  The courses are designed to relate to the needs of contemporary men and women so that knowledge and faith may be integrated, and the dialogue of faith, reason and culture may be continued.

Holy Cross Seminary

Holy Cross Seminary is the National Seminary for the training of diocesan clergy. Established in 1900 in the Dunedin Diocese, it was sited at Mosgiel for nearly 100 years.  In 1998 the Seminary moved to the present site in Ponsonby, Auckland.  While it continues with the same tradition and serving the six Dioceses of New Zealand, Holy Cross Seminary aims to help form priests for the third Christian millennium.

Lectures are undertaken at Good Shepherd College which is jointly staffed by Diocesan Clergy, Society of Mary and other members of religious congregations based around the University academic year. At these times most of the students return home with the opportunity for work in their own locality.

Theological study takes places at nearby Good shepherd College which is jointly owned by the bishops of New Zealand and the Marist Order, where Marist fathers are among those on the teaching staff, with specific responsiblity for the teaching of systematic theology, scripture, philosophy, human development and pastoral care.
