On November 1st the Church celebrates the feast of All Saints so I thought I would display some items linked to this celebration. The founders of the Diocese imported books for the training of priests. Included was this 1699 publication of the canons and decrees of the Council of Trent.
In session 25 there were decrees on the invocation, veneration and relics of saints and on sacred Images.
“The holy Synod enjoins on all bishops, and others who sustain the office and charge of teaching, that, agreeably to the usage of the Catholic and Apostolic Church, received from the primitive times of the Christian religion, and agreeably to the consent of the holy Fathers, and to the decrees of sacred Councils, they especially instruct the faithful diligently concerning the intercession and invocation of saints; the honour to relics; and the legitimate use of images: ….”
The Diocesan Collection includes a number of relics complete with the authenticating documentation. This relic of St Bernadine has a certificate date 1762 while the relic of St Rose is 1836
Our most recent relic is from 2010 from Saint Mary McKillop.
